Going Swimming at Albert Avenue Pools and Fitness
Albert Avenue Pools and Fitness now has three swimming pools, two indoor and an outdoor lido. Note that the lido is heated to an average of 28 degrees on a seasonal basis from May through to September and that in the occurence of bad weather (including but not exclusive to thunder and lightning) during an outdoor swim, lido swimmers will be transferred into the main pool.
Before visiting it is important that you visit our Pool Safety Rules page first to make sure you see our rules on adult to child ratios in the main pool and outdoor lido. Our pool safety rules exist for the safety of swimmers, so read the rules first to avoid any disappointment upon arrival.
Cold water swimming at Albert Avenue Pools and Fitness
Throughout the winter months, the outdoor lido at Albert Avenue Pools and Fitness will be offering cold water swimming sessions. The outdoor lido temperature will reduce to a minimum of 10 degrees celsius during these months.
These sessions are for people aged 18+ only and if you have any medical issues or concerns you must consult your GP before participating.
Read the guidance before participating in our cold water swim sessions –
Clothing
- as the temperature of the lido will be cold, customers are encouraged to wear a swimming cap and use a wetsuit. Ensure that the wetsuit being used is one designed for swimming and not for other outdoor sports such as kayaking and windsurfing
- the wetsuit being used must be clean and not used for other outdoor activities to prevent any contamination
- chlorine levels in the lido may affect the insulation and durability of your wetsuit so check with the manufacturer before using
Safety
- it is the responsibility of the swimmer to ensure that they are physically capable of participating in the session. You will be asked to complete a basic health check form before the session to confirm you have no medical conditions which may prevent you from participating
- the temperature of the water in the lido may be a shock to the body, to prevent the risk of cold water shock, slowly enter the pool via the shallow end steps and allow your body to acclimatise to the water temperature
- while the session may be 45 minutes long, we expect swimmers to be mindful of time spent in the water due to the temperature. Exit the water whenever you feel that you need to do so
- after the session, upon exiting the pool, dry off indoors prior to showering. It is important to ensure that you dry off properly after your session to return your body temperature to normal before showering
- ensure you have a warm drink after your session
